Our group originated in 2018 when our President, Elaine Toney, met some volunteers from the Ferst Readers group of Madison, Georgia. She returned to Tallapoosa County and enthusiastically began recruiting volunteers to create a Community Action Team (CAT) to benefit the residents of our county.

Ferst Readers of Tallapoosa County (FRTC) is dedicated to improving literacy in our county through our FRTC Early Literacy Program.

Our Community Action Team was the first in the State of Alabama. We began FRTC with 17 volunteers from diverse backgrounds in education, business, banking, social services, the ministry, and other non-profit organizations. FRTC embraces the mission of our parent organization, but also has an "Alabama Mission" – the development of a strong CAT program that will succeed in Tallapoosa County, while also allowing us to support and guide development of CATs in adjacent counties, with the aim of expanding our program throughout the state and significantly increasing literacy in the State of Alabama.
